ShotQuality data has quickly become a resource for some of the sharpest bettors in basketball due to its ability to help analyze the probabilities and values of players and team performances. One of the most highly sought after additions to the SQ set of tools has been the ability to have a rapid calculations of ShotQuality to enable faster in-game evaluations for any type of basketball fan.
After much testing, researching and fine tuning, ShotQualityLive is ready for its official launch! Let’s explore what’s available with this new tool, how to use it to find value in betting markets, and how you can access it! (Hint: It’s free for the rest of the NBA Playoffs)
What’s Available with ShotQualityLive
ShotQualityLive is designed to be a companion display for any basketball contest. To find the page, simply visit ShotQualityBets.com and look for the banner underneath the toolbar. When a game is active, the “LIVE” link will popup, directing you to the page for the game in question.
When on the page, you will see the following displays. Here’s what each one does:
Live Scoreboard
At the top of the page is the Scoreboard which displays the current score for each team with ShotQuality’s expected score beneath it. This is the fastest way to see if a team is performing up to their expectations. To learn more about how ShotQuality Scores are calculated visit our Stats Explained page.
Live Box Score
Beneath the Scoreboard is a player-by-player box score listing. This section of the page breaks down the performance of each player, allowing for individual evaluation. Each player that takes a shot during the game will be shown along with their points scored, SQ Points generated, the ShotQualityBets Prop Model pre-game points projection and the closing line for the player’s point prop. Everything you need to know to track and evaluate the points a player has scored throughout the game.
The Box Score also has emoji indicators to quickly indicate performance. When a player is hot you’ll see a 🔥. When a player is cold, you’ll see a 🥶. When a player is performing as expected within two points of their SQ Score, you will see a 🎯. These indicators are designed to quickly show if a player is doing better or worse than ShotQuality expects based on the shots they’ve taken. Letting you line up performance to projections and betting lines.
Live Shot Types
The final section of the SQLive page, Shot Types provide a key look into the way the game is unfolding. Every shot is rated against the entire SQ Database of shots attempted for a season, based on if the value of each shot taken falls into the top, bottom or middle third of all shots, they are rated Good, Average or Bad, respectively. So if a team has 5 good shots, they have taken 5 shots that rank in the top 33% of all shots for the entire year, etc. These ShotTypes are also denoted with the percentage of total shots a team has had, making it easy to note if a team is getting a high rate of good or bad attempts. This section quickly adds valuable context to the way a game is going.
Also included in the ShotTypes are the numbers of 3PT shots and Midrange shots a team has produced. A team forced into a high number of Midrange shots is usually not creating the most valuable opportunities available and can be a key predictive factor in performance.
How to Use ShotQualityLive to Find Betting Value
ShotQuality’s expected data can be used in many ways to gain an edge in betting markets. Most commonly, it is used to indicate over or under performing players and teams which then can be used to evaluate betting lines. With ShotQualityLive, all of that happens in real time.
Using the Scoreboard and Box Score, you can find teams and players to evaluate against their actual performance. When a team is underperforming, ShotQuality’s data indicates that they are more likely to return to their normal level of performance, so there could be value betting on this team. The same goes for the opposite case, when a team or player is over performing relative to their ShotQuality score, you likely can gain expected value on the market by betting against them. In short, hot players tend to cool off, cold players tend to make up lost ground.
That is not to say the return to normal happens 100% of the time. There will be many instances where over performing teams continue to stay hot, or a player in a slump doesn’t correct his play. The value of ShotQuality is in the ability to identify these scenarios quickly and have an understanding of how hot or cold, lucky or unlucky a performance might be. With this added level of expected data, you can make more informed bets.
Betting Cheat Sheet 🔥
Given that ShotQuality’s data has proven players and teams will trend to their expected scores over time, the following recommended betting conditions can be expected to profit in close game situations*
- When a team is underperforming their SQ Score, bet on this team to cover the live spread.
- Example: Team A: 52 (60.3), Team B 55 (55.1) – Bet on Team A as they are expected to be doing better than they actually are.
- When a team is outperforming their SQ score, bet against this team to cover the live spread.
- Example: Team C: 85 (83.9), Team D 81 (74.7) – Bet against Team D as they are expected to be doing worse than they actually are.
- When a player is underperforming their SQ Score, bet on this player to go Over their Live Prop
- Example: Player A has Scored 10 points, SQ Expected 15. This player is getting good looks but has missed some shots, if they continue to get the same looks they are expected to score at a better rate.
- When a player is outperforming their SQ Score, bet on this player to go Under their Live Prop
- Example: Player B has scored 30 points, but SQ Expected 22. This player is not getting great looks but is converting them at a good rate, if they continue to get the same quality of shot they are expected to score at a worse rate.
* close game situations are those where there is not extended garbage time (Win Percent > 95%)
